Bullpen meltdowns were the story of the day in the Royals' minor leagues, as both the Omaha Storm Chasers and Northwest Arkansas Naturals surrendered late leads in heartbreaking losses. The Kane County Cougars, however, shut out the Quad Cities River Bandits while celebrating their first walk-off win of the season. Click inside to read the day's entire report.

Triple-A: Round Rock 7, Omaha 5

L: Louis Coleman (0-1, 6.75)
HR: Eric Hosmer (1), Clint Robinson (4)

Summary: Round Rock rallied for three runs in the eighth inning off of Omaha reliever Louis Coleman, completing a four-game sweep of the Storm Chasers. In the process, Coleman was tagged with his first blown save and first loss of the season.

Omaha got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to Eric Hosmer’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot off of Round Rock starter Zach Jackson. Meanwhile, Omaha spot starter Kevin Pucetas pitched well, holding the Express to just two runs on five hits over five innings.

Omaha broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth on an RBI double by Lorenzo Cain, who played in his first game this season after being activated off the disabled list on Thursday. Clint Robinson then extended the Omaha lead to 4-2 with his fourth home run of the season in the sixth, before Round Rock rallied for five runs in the late innings against the Storm Chaser bullpen.

Other Notes: Mike Moustakas had the day off and did not play…Clint Robinson was struck in the elbow by a fastball in the eighth inning, and he had to be removed from the game. Hosmer shifted from designated hitter to first base, meaning the pitcher spot would have had to bat (or been pinch hit for) had the lineup come back around to Robinson’s spot in the order…Lorenzo Cain celebrated his return to action with an excellent day. In addition to finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI double, the center fielder also gunned down a runner at the plate for his first assist of the season.

Next Game: Omaha (2-6) opens the brand new Werner Park on Friday, hosting the Nashville Sounds (5-3) for a four-game series. Danny Duffy (0-0, 3.60) is slated to start for the Storm Chasers, who are looking to end a four-game losing streak.

Double-A: San Antonio 7, NW Arkansas 4

L: Patrick Keating (0-1, 10.80)
HR: None

Summary: Down 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth, San Antonio struck for six runs against relievers Brandon Sisk and Patrick Keating, defeating the Naturals, 7-4. The loss snaps NW Arkansas’ five-game winning streak.

John Lamb made his second start of the season for the Naturals and battled with his control, walking five batters in 3.2 innings while throwing just 35 of his 73 pitches for strikes. San Antonio, however, could not capitalize, scoring just once against the 20-year-old southpaw.

Jeff Bianchi put the Naturals on the board in the top of the fourth, driving in Christian Colon with an RBI single. Bianchi then came around to score on a fielding error by the Missions’ second baseman, giving NW Arkansas a 2-1 lead. A bases-loaded wild pitch followed by a sac fly by Nick Van Stratten pushed the lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh, setting up the decisive eighth inning against the Naturals’ bullpen.

Other Notes: Despite a still-respectable 4.05 ERA, Lamb has now walked seven batters in 6.2 innings while fanning just three. Opponents are hitting .292 against him thus far...Prior to the game, the Naturals placed Eric Basurto on the seven-day disabled list and activated reliever Harold Mozingo. See our Hot News item on the transaction here.

Next Game: The first place Naturals (5-2) continue their three-game set with San Antonio (4-3) on Friday, with Will Smith (0-0, 2.08) slated to make his second start of the season.

Next Game: The first place Blue Rocks (4-2) were off on Thursday, traveling to Wilmington for their home opener on Friday against Potomac (2-3). Justin Marks (0-0, 5.40) is slated to get the ball for the ‘Rocks in the opener.

Low-A: Kane County 1, Quad Cities 0 (10 innings)

W: Chase Boruff (1-0, 2.25)
HR: None

Summary: Yowill Espinal’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning plated Gerard Hall and won the game for Kane County, who celebrated their first walk-off win of the season. The victory snapped the Cougars’ three-game losing streak, salvaging the finale of their four-game series with Quad Cities.

Kane County starter Leondy Perez was excellent for the second straight start, holding the River Bandits scoreless over five innings while fanning five and allowing just two hits and a walk. Nick Wooley followed with four outstanding innings of his own, preserving the shutout while striking out five and allowing just one hit and no walks. Chase Boruff contributed a scoreless inning of his own, earning his first victory of the season when the Cougars pushed across the winning run.

The offense, meanwhile, struggled against Quad Cities starter Jordan Swagerty, who matched zeroes with the Kane County staff for seven innings while striking out nine. The Cougars collected eight hits on the day. Alex Llanos continued his blistering pace with a 2-for-5 effort, while Gerard Hall finished 3-for-4 with his first double of the season.

Other Notes: Leondy Perez has yet to allow an earned run through two starts and 12.0 innings pitched this season. The 21-year-old has yielded just six hits and three walks while fanning eight batters. Perez spent last season in Idaho Falls, where he was 3-6 with a 5.70 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched.

Next Game: The Cougars (3-5) now travel to Clinton for a three-game series against the LumberKings (2-6). Keaton Hayenga (1-0, 1.80) will look to build upon his excellent 2011 debut as he makes his second start of the season for Kane County.
