Royals Farm Report: May 1

Elisaul Pimentel was excellent on Sunday

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals were rained out yet again on Sunday, while the Wilmington Blue Rocks completed a three-game sweep of the Winston-Salem Dash. Elsewhere in the minors, both the Omaha Storm Chasers and Kane County Cougars fell in close contests. Read all about the day's action inside in today's Farm Report.

Triple-A: Iowa 7, Omaha 5

L: Jeff Suppan (2-3, 5.81)
HR: None

Brief Summary: Omaha starter Jeff Suppan spotted Iowa six runs in the top of the second, and that was all the Cubs would need in a 7-5 win over the Storm Chasers on Sunday afternoon. Omaha fought back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of two-run singles by Mike Moustakas and Irving Falu, but the Iowa bullpen clamped down after that, allowing just one more run over the final 4.2 frames. Johnny Giavotella and Falu both finished with two hits apiece in Omaha's nine-hit attack.

Other Notes: With the four-game split, the Storm Chasers remain 2.0 games ahead of the Iowa Cubs in the PCL American North Division…With two more walks on Sunday in a 1-for-3 effort, Eric Hosmer now has a .522 on-base percentage over his last 10 games. He is 15-for-36 over that stretch with nine walks and just six strikeouts.

Next Game: The first place Storm Chasers (14-9) now head to Albuquerque for a four-game series with the Isotopes (13-9). The two clubs opened the season against each other, splitting a four-game set, and this will be Omaha's final trip to Albuquerque this season. Kevin Pucetas (2-0, 2.12) is slated to start the series opener for the Storm Chasers.

High-A: Wilmington 4, Winston-Salem 2

W: Kelvin Herrera (2-1, 0.84)
HR: None

Brief Summary: Entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Wilmington offense had recorded just one hit on the day. The bats suddenly came alive, however, and the Blue Rocks plated three runs in the frame to notch a 4-2 win, completing a three-game sweep of the Dash in the process. Wilmington received an excellent start by Elisaul Pimentel, who retired the final 16 batters he faced before giving way to Kelvin Herrera, who was credited with the victory. Carlo Testa – who ignited the fateful eighth inning rally with a single – finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Other Notes: Prior to the game, the Royals released infielder Adam Frost and activated outfielder Adrian Ortiz off the seven-day disabled list. Read our report on the transaction here…Congratulations to Rey Navarro, who on Sunday was named by Royals Corner as the Royals organization's "Hitter of the Month" for April.

Next Game: The first place Blue Rocks (15-7, 5.0 games ahead of Frederick) now host Lynchburg (7-14) for a three-game set beginning Monday evening. Tim Melville (2-2, 3.80) will get the ball for Wilmington in the series opener.

Low-A: Cedar Rapids 5, Kane County 4

L: Nick Wooley (0-2, 4.85)
HR: None

Brief Summary: After battling to a 1-1 tie in regulation, both Cedar Rapids and Kane County plated three runs apiece in the 11th inning, with Geulin Beltre delivering a two-run, game-tying double to send the game to the 12th. Unfortunately, the Kernels pushed across an unanswered run in the next frame, sending the Cougars to a tough 5-4 loss. Kane County starter Leondy Perez pitched well in a no decision, holding Cedar Rapids to just one run on six hits over 6.1 innings. The outing represented a nice rebound for the 21-year-old right-hander, who failed to escape the first inning his last time out. On offense, Alex Llanos, Beltre, and Brian Fletcher all contributed two hits apiece.

Other Notes: Prior to the game, right-hander Keaton Hayenga was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a sore shoulder. To take his place on the roster, Robbie Penny was assigned to the club from extended spring training. Read our report on the transaction here…Brian Fletcher returned to action for the first time since leaving Thursday's game. The 22-year-old outfielder was day-to-day with leg tightness.

Next Game: The Cougars (8-16) and Kernels (15-8) play again on Monday afternoon, with Robbie Penny being immediately thrown into the fire. The 22-year-old will start for Kane County in his Class A debut.
