Two of the Royals' affiliates were rained out on Wednesday, but in a strange twist of fate, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals were not one of them. Indeed, the Royals' Double-A affiliate won their series opener at Frisco, thanks largely to an outstanding performance by starter Buddy Baumann. In the night's other game, the Blue Rocks finished off the Keys with a walk-off win.

Triple-A: Tucson at Omaha – Postponed (Rain)

Next Game: After Wednesday’s rainout, the Storm Chasers (25-20) and Padres (19-27) will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader on Thursday evening. Jeremy Jeffress (0-0, 0.00) and Jeff Suppan (3-4, 5.66) are slated to start the two games for Omaha.

Double-A: NW Arkansas 6, Frisco 2

W: Buddy Baumann
HR: None

Summary: Making just his second start of the season, NW Arkansas southpaw Buddy Baumann shut down the RoughRiders on Wednesday, earning his first victory of the season in the Naturals’ 6-2 win. The 23-year-old Missouri State product shut Frisco out on just two hits over six innings while fanning seven. Meanwhile, the Naturals offense went to work, plating six runs during the middle innings while building a 6-0 lead. NW Arkansas reliever Eduardo Paulino gave back a couple of runs in the eighth, but Brandon Sisk and Patrick Keating combined to record the final four outs to preserve the win. Nick Van Stratten paced the Naturals’ 11-hit attack by finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Christian Colon and Salvador Perez were both 2-for-4.

Other Notes: Prior to the game, the Naturals sent reliever Heath Rollins to Omaha and welcomed Wilmington right-hander Manauris Baez. Read our report on the transaction here...Salvador Perez now has a nine-game hitting streak. The 21-year-old backstop is hitting .353 (12-for-34) over that stretch…In his two starts this season, Buddy Baumann has allowed just one run on three hits while fanning 11 batters in 10.0 innings pitched…After snapping an 0-for-14 skid, Christian Colon is 5-for-8 over his last two games…Outfielder Nick Van Stratten recorded three hits in a game for the first time this season. Wednesday’s performance was his third game this year with at least three RBIs…Since allowing four runs in just one-third of an inning on May 7, Brandon Sisk has made four scoreless appearances. Over his last 7.2 innings pitched, the 25-year-old southpaw has fanned 13 batters without issuing a walk, and he has surrendered just three hits.

High-A: Wilmington 6, Frederick 5

W: Brendan Lafferty (1-1, 2.35)
HR: None

Summary: The Blue Rocks stormed back from a late 5-2 deficit, plating four runs over the final two frames to secure a 6-5 walk-off win over the visiting Keys. After doubling and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Yem Prades scored the game-winner when an attempted pitchout got past the Frederick catcher for a wild pitch. Brendan Lafferty, who tossed a scoreless top of the ninth for the Rocks, was credited with his first victory of the season pitching in relief of the piggyback combination of Tyler Sample and Justin Marks. Sample started and battled his control a bit, walking three batters while surrendering three runs in four innings of work. Marks followed with four innings of his own, holding the Keys to just one run on four hits while fanning six. On offense, Prades finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Jose Bonilla drove in a pair while finishing 2-for-3. The series win over Frederick gives the Blue Rocks a four-game lead over the second place Keys in the Carolina League’s Northern Division.

Other Notes: Tyler Sample, who has done a relatively decent job reducing his walks this season, issued three free passes for just the second time in nine appearances…Wednesday’s performance was the second straight strong outing for Justin Marks, who has allowed just one run on nine hits while fanning 13 over his last 11.0 innings pitched…Yem Prades collected his first two career extra base hits on Wednesday. The 23-year-old outfielder is 5-for-14 (.357) through his first four games…Jose Bonilla turned in his fifth multi-hit performance in his last nine games. The 22-year-old catcher is now hitting .372/.417/.419 in May.

Next Game: After many of the Wilmington players took in the Royals’ 9-2 loss in Baltimore on Wednesday night, the Blue Rocks (28-17) have Thursday off before hitting the road for a three-game series at Myrtle Beach (26-19). Jake Odorizzi (4-0, 2.28) is scheduled to start the series opener for Wilmington on Friday night.
