The St. Louis Cardinals reportedly plan to hire a familiar name as their new assistant hitting coach.

Before catcher Bengie Molina made his decision to retire as an active player, the St. Louis Cardinals reportedly looked into his asking price to serve as the back up catcher to his brother Yadier in 2011.

Bengie ended up not signing anywhere that season, announcing his retirement this February. His final contest as an active player was Game 5 of the 2010 World Series after having been traded from the NL-champion Giants (and World Champs) to the AL’s-best Texas Rangers.

Now, the 38-year-old is set to become the new assistant hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals. The job has been offered, though the formal announcement is not expected until next week, reports the Post-Dispatch.

Molina’s predecessor, John Mabry, was promoted to hitting coach when Mark McGwire resigned last month to take the comparable job with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The eldest brother of the catching Molinas retired with a .274 average, 711 RBI and a .718 OPS over 1,362 games in parts of 13 major league seasons with the Angels, Blue Jays, Giants and Rangers. He earned a world title with the 2002 Halos.
