Cardinals Boggs and Mujica avoid arbitration

Two right-handed relievers have come to terms with the St. Louis Cardinals on 2013 contracts.

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have come to terms with pitchers Mitchell Boggs and Edward Mujica on one-year contracts for the upcoming 2013 season. In doing so, they avoid salary arbitration.

In his first year of eligibility, Boggs will receive $1,475,000 after making $506,000 last season. Mujica, in his third and final arbitration season, will get $3.2 million after earning $1,625,000 a year ago.

The team also exchanged salary arbitration figures with their other three eligible players - those with between three and six years of major league service - third baseman David Freese and relief pitchers Jason Motte and Marc Rzepczynski.

Boggs
Boggs appeared in a career-high 78 games last season (tied for fourth in the National League) and set a Cardinals record with 34 holds. The right-hander's 2.21 ERA ranked sixth among NL relievers and he allowed just 17.1 percent of inherited runners to score (seventh in the league). On Thursday, the 28 year-old was named to the provisional roster for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic,

Mujica, 28, was acquired in a July trade deadline deal from Miami. The right-hander helped solidify the Cardinals bullpen, posting a 1.03 ERA and 19 holds in 29 games with the Cardinals. Mujica did not allow a run in his first 18 games with St. Louis, pitching the seventh inning in 23 of his 29 appearances. Mujica fanned 21 batters and issued just two unintentional walks in his 26 1/3 innings pitched as a Cardinal.
