Decisions To Be Made

Ryan McBroom is one of five West Virginia baseball players who will have decisions to make before the July 15 Major League Baseball signing deadline.

McBroom, who was drafted in the 36th round by the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, has a busy schedule before next month's deadline. He'll meet with WVU head coach Randy Mazey to discuss his draft position and prospects next week, then head to New Hampshire to play in a summer league during July.

While there, Kansas City scouts will watch him play, and the front office will put together an offer for him. Then, the big decision will come.

"I have to balance what I will be getting on my scholarship with that offer, but I really haven't thought about it a lot yet," McBroom said on Saturday. "To be honest, I'm nor sure what all will go into my decision. I'm going to talk with Coach Mazey, and then go up to New Hampshire and see how it plays out."

While there, McBroom will obviously have a big decision on his mind, but he'll try to put that aside on the field.

"I just need to go there with a lot of confidence and put together good at-bats," he said. "Kansas City area scout Jim Farra called me after they picked me, and that's what we really talked about -- just going up there and working and having good at-bats."

McBroom and Kansas City haven't talked money yet, and that might wait until the Royals see him in action in New England. Until then, he'll keep concentrating on his plate appearances and performance on the field -- but in the back of his mind, he'll know that a big decision is looming.
