RC Organizational Report: June 24

Overall, it was a pretty good day for the Royals' affiliates on Sunday. It was a full slate, as all seven clubs were in action, and the clubs combined to go 5-3 on the day. Omaha split a doubleheader while Idaho Falls lost it's first game of the year. In North Carolina, Julio Pimentel scattered four hits over seven innings to pick up the win for the Blue Rocks. The Omaha Royals opened up the first game of a doubleheader with a win over Oklahoma, 8-2. Every member of the O-Royals lineup had at least one hit, with the exception of leadoff hitter Mitch Maier, as they pounded former Royals "All-Star" Mark Redman for eight runs in less than six innings.

The Omaha Royals and Oklahoma Redbirds ended up splitting the doubleheader, with game two going to the Redbirds, 6-4. Mitch Maier led the Omaha attack with a 2-for-4 night, including a double and a triple. Maier in his last 10 games is batting .318 with six extra-base hits and two stolen bases. Weird stat -- Craig Brazell has gone 2-for-4 in his last six games, with a home run in five of them. Billy Buckner (6-2, 4.15), will try and build off his one-hit performance on Monday afternoon.

The Wichita Wranglers pulled out a victory in extra innings over the Arkansas Travelers, 2-1. After a solid starting performance from Jason Cromer, righty Jarod Plummer was excellent for four innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five. Recently promoted Gilbert de la Vara got a save in his first attempt for the Wranglers. Chris Lubanski's only hit of the game proved useful as he drove in the game winning run with a double in the top of the tenth.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks held on for a 4-3 win over Winston-Salem on Sunday. Carolina League All-Star Julio Pimentel threw one of this best games of the season, going seven plus innings while allowing only one run on four hits. Josh Johnson, who has struggled most of the year, went 3-for-4 with a couple of doubles. Brad McCann, in his first start for the Blue Rocks, went 2-for-3 with only his third walk of the year.

The Burlington Bees took this game 6-0 as the pitching, led by 18-year-old Edward Cegarra, was dominant. Cegarra allowed only two hits and struck out four in six innings of work. Josh Cribb finished out the final three innings of the game to pick up the save. Jeff Bianchi and Michael Thompson each had two hits for the Bees.

The Idaho Falls Chukars lost their first game of the season, dropping this one to the Orem Owlz, 9-5. Ben Norton, the club’s 24th round selection, gave Idaho Falls four solid innings before giving way to the bullpen. However, John Leonard was torched for nine runs in four innings of work, ultimately giving Orem the win. Clint Robinson had three hits to raise his average to .406 on the young season.

The Burlington Royals won on a single in the ninth inning by Brett Amyx to take Sunday's game, 9-8. Antonio Jimenez scored three runs to compliment his 1-for-3 game. Each of the big first basemen, Jake Lane and Brett Amyx, went 2-for-4 on the day. The B-Royals will hit the road on Monday to take on the Bristol Sox.

The AZL Royals took the loss on Sunday afternoon to the Athletics, 9-5. Outside the horrid debut of eighth round selection Casey Feickert, the Royals played a pretty good game. Matthew Kniginyzky, coming back from labrum surgery, went three innings while allowing two runs, neither earned. The Royals’ fourth round pick, Canadian Mitch Hodge, had a fantastic pro debut, going two innings while striking out two and inducing four ground ball outs. Seventh round pick Hilton Richardson went 1-for-4, and Diego Cruz was 2-for-4 with his first professional home run.
