Royals affiliates got some great pitching performances on Thursday. Wichita wasted Carlos Rosa’s brilliant start in a doubleheader split, although Greg Atencio made up for it with a great start of his own. Harold Mozingo turned in a fine start for the Bees, and Rowdy Hardy won his tenth game of the season for the Blue Rocks. AAA: Omaha 9, New Orleans 0 W: Scott Elarton (2-2, 4.18) HR: Bill McCarthy (3)
The Omaha Royals shut out the New Orleans Zephyrs 9-0 on Thursday afternoon. Scott Elarton started for the O-Royals on a ‘rehab’ start, and went six innings, allowing no runs and two hits. Multiple players had great days offensively, including Mitch Maier, who went 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. _________________________________________________________ AA: Corpus Christi 7, Wichita 2 (7 innings) L: D.J. Mattox (0-1, 19.29)
The Wichita Wranglers were stomped in game one of the twin split, 7-2. Carlos Rosa's superb outing was wasted when Dusty Hughes and newly acquired D.J. Mattox allowed a combined seven runs. Rosa went five innings, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out six. In the absence of Chris Lubanski, Mike Stodolka took the third spot in the batting order and responded with a 2-for-3 night. Wichita 3, Corpus Christi 2 W: Greg Atencio (3-4, 3.86)
The Wichita Wranglers scored three runs in the first inning of game two, and that's all they would need to hold on for a 3-2 victory. Each team only scratched out four hits, and Irving Falu had two for the Wranglers. Greg Atencio provided an excellent start, going all seven innings while allowing only two runs. Luke Hochevar (3-6, 4.63) will be on the mound on Friday for the Wranglers. _________________________________________________________ High A: Wilmington 5, Lynchburg 3 W: Rowdy Hardy (10-1, 1.51), S: Russell Haltiwanger (3) HR: Kiel Thibault (2)
The Wilmington Blue Rocks slid by the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday, taking the game, 5-3. Rowdy Hardy had one of his worst starts of the year, as today's game was one of the few times all season he has allowed two runs. Hardy allowed only one hit and one walk, but hit four batters in his 10th win of the year. Hardy's 10 wins and 1.51 ERA both lead the Carolina League. Jose Duarte raised his average to .290 with a 3-for-5 effort. _________________________________________________________ Low A: Burlington 4, Kane County 3 W: Harold Mozingo (7-6, 4.35), S: Chris Hayes (5) HR: Michael Thompson (15)
The Burlington Bees won their second in a row against Kane County with a 4-3 victory on Thursday. Starter Harold Mozingo went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Joe Dickerson, now owner of a six-game hitting streak, is batting .444 in his last 10 games. Brady Everett recorded his third straight 2-for-4 game, raising his average to .296. Eighteen-year-old righty Edward Cegarra (1-0, 4.11) will go on Friday to open up a series with Peoria. _________________________________________________________ R-Adv: Orem 15, Idaho Falls 8 L: Chris Denton (0-1, 6.43)
One night after a big win, the Idaho Falls Chukars were on the other side of the score on Thursday, as the pitching staff got smacked around in a 15-8 loss to the Orem Owlz. Devery Van De Keere led the offense with three hits on the night, and Clint Robinson added two more for the Chukars. Nick Van Stratten was 2-for-2 on the night with two walks, and was hit by a pitch in his final at-bat to reach base for the fifth time in the game. _________________________________________________________ The Burlington Royals game with Johnson City on Thursday was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 2. _________________________________________________________ R: Rangers 9, Royals 6 L: Josh Santerre (1-1, 5.40)
The AZL Royals fell to 1-5 on the season with a 9-6 loss to the Rangers. Third round pick Danny Duffy made his debut, and it was a great one. Duffy went two innings, allowed no hits and struck out four. Young shortstop Lifete Jose had two hits, and 12th round pick Sean McCauley was 1-for-3 with a double. |
