RC Organizational Report: July 5

It was a forgettable day for the organization, as the Royals affiliates went 3-4 on Thursday. Wichita was swept away in a doubleheader, while Omaha found itself on the losing end of a slugfest. However, the Idaho Falls Chukars snapped a two-game losing streak, and the Arizona Royals won when their opponents forgot how to play defense. The Omaha Royals lost in a slugfest Thursday night, 14-11. Mitch Maier had a big night for the O-Royals, going 3-for-6 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Chris Lubanski reached base three times and scored three runs, recording one hit and two walks. Lefty Sean Thompson, recently plucked off waivers from the Padres, tossed a scoreless inning in his debut for Omaha.

The Wichita Wranglers were downed 6-5 in game one of the doubleheader on Thursday night. Luke Hochevar struggled, allowing five runs on seven hits in his four innings of work, despite striking out six. Wichita got right back in the game though when Geraldo Valentin blasted his second home run of the year. However, Jarod Plummer could not hold that lead when he gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth that provided the difference in game one.

Game two between the Wichita Wranglers and the Corpus Christi Hooks also came down the wire, but the Hooks prevailed with a run in the bottom of the ninth to win, 3-2. Greg Atencio was excellent for seven innings, allowing only two runs on two hits. Geraldo Valentin capped off an excellent day with a 3-for-4 effort in both games of the doubleheader.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks won in a close game Thursday night, 4-3. Cody Clark gave the Blue Rock offense the big blast of the night, knocking a three-run homer in the top of the fifth that proved to be the difference in the game. Tyler Chambliss got his second start for the Blue Rocks, and despite allowing 11 baserunners, he allowed only three runs in five innings of work.

The Burlington Bees took the defeat on Thursday with an 8-4 loss to Beloit. This is becoming quite the broken record, but Joe Dickerson had another great game for the Bees. Dickerson went 2-for-5 with a run scored to bump his average to .295. Starter Edward Cegarra took the loss, going four innings and allowing two runs while walking a season high five batters and striking out one. Everett Teaford got the ball for the next 4.2 innings, and he allowed six runs on five hits to inflate his ERA to 5.54.

The Idaho Falls Chukars sprinted to victory behind excellent pitching over the Casper Rockies, 2-0. John Leonard and Joseph Hughes combined to shut out Casper, allowing seven hits while walking none and striking out 10. Clint Robinson went 2-for-3 with a walk, and Manuel Juan went 3-for-4 while recording the only RBI for the Chukars.

The Burlington Royals had the day off on Thursday. They also have the day off on Friday, and will return to action at Greeneville on Saturday night.

The AZL Royals have been in a few blowouts in recent days, but they came out on top on Thursday, 13-3. Although a bit wild, Matthew Mitchell and Michael Lehmann each tossed two innings and allowed one run. Diego Cruz went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Only five of the Royals’ 13 runs were earned, as they were helped out by an incredible eight errors by the Brewers’ defense. In a possibly related development, the AZ Brewers are in last place in the Arizona League.
