RC Organizational Report: July 22

All seven clubs were in action on Sunday, and the three most advanced affiliates won, while the bottom four all lost, including two shutouts. The highlight of the day was provided by Wichita's Kila Kaaihue, who homered in his first two at bats en route to a 3-for-5 game. The Omaha Royals won their third straight game over Memphis on Sunday afternoon, 8-5. Matt Wright got the start, and despite giving up 10 hits, he held the opponent to only two runs in his 5.2 innings of work. Neal Musser tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the save. Joey Gathright reached base four times and stole two bases in the O-Royals victory.

The Wichita Wranglers broke a five-game losing streak with an 8-1 victory over Springfield. Carlos Rosa was excellent for five innings, allowing a run on four hits, and striking out five. Kila Kaaihue was the story of the night, however. Kaaihue blasted two home runs in his first two at-bats, and lined a single to left in his final at-bat. Adam Greenberg and Jorge Padilla also homered in the Wranglers victory.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks prevailed 6-3 on Sunday night behind an excellent start from Tyler Chambliss. The Florida State product went the first five innings, allowing one run on five hits. Jose Duarte had two hits, as did Chris McConnell, and both knocked in a run for the Blue Rocks. Despite the jump to the Carolina League, McConnell’s OPS is nearly 100 points higher than it was in the Midwest League.

The Burlington Bees recorded six more hits than their opponents on Sunday, but still lost 5-3. Edward Cegerra tossed the first 5.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out four. Joseph Dickerson had two hits, pushing his average over .300 for the first time since April. Kurt Mertins, getting a rare start at shortstop, also had two hits on the night.

The Idaho Falls Chukars were defeated 7-5 on Sunday night. John Leonard had a bad start, yielding seven runs in 2.2 innings, but he was not helped by his defense at all, as it committed two errors behind him. Oscar Gonzalez, who was hitless in his last 14 at-bats, doubled in the ninth inning.

The Burlington Royals were shut out on the road by the Danville Braves on Sunday night, 1-0. Starter Brian Gausman was excellent for the B-Royals, allowing only one run in five innings of work, as was 13th round pick Alexander Caldera, who allowed only one hit in three innings. Six players in the lineup for the Royals had one hit, but no one had more than that.

The AZL Royals were shut out 6-0 on Sunday afternoon by some stellar Giants pitching. Mitch Hodge got the start for the Royals, and he allowed three runs on seven hits, but he did strike out five. Unfortunately, the Royals offense didn't show up to work, chalking up only six hits for the game.
