RC Organizational Report: August 2

It was a busy day for the Royals' minor league system, as the seven affiliates combined to play eight games, winning five. The B-Royals split a doubleheader, and in Burlington, Joe Dickerson reached base safely for the 35th straight game, setting a club record in the process. John Leonard and Ben Swaggerty combined to throw a rain-shortened no-hitter for the Chukars. RC has all the details inside.

For the second straight night, the Omaha Royals held off the Las Vegas 51's, 3-1, in a game broadcast on RSTN. Starter Matt Wright was excellent, allowing only one run on five hits in seven innings. Justin Huber hit a towering home run to left for the second straight night. Ryan Shealy had two more hits on his rehab assignment, both on hard hit balls through the hole on the left side of the infield. For his great pitching performance, Wright got a shaving cream pie in the face during an interview with Frank White after the game.

The Wichita Wranglers lost 8-3 in the series finale with Tulsa. Greg Atencio was torched eight runs in less than four innings of work, although his defense didn't help him out too much. Kila Kaaihue went 2-for-3 with a home run, his sixth in a Wranglers uniform this year.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks won 4-2 at Frederick on Thursday evening. Dan Cortes put together his second good start in a row, allowing a run on three hits in five innings of work. Marc Maddox had another two hits, and has six hits in his last two games. Mario Lisson also had two hits and is batting .344 in his last 10 games. Rayner Oliveros picked up his fifth save with two perfect innings.

The Burlington Bees pitching was roughed up a bit in a 9-5 loss to Kane County. Starter Edward Cegarra gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings, raising his ERA to 4.24. Harold Mozingo recorded two outs but walked three in his return from the DL. Jeff Bianchi went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and fellow infielder Kurt Mertins went 2-for-4 with a couple of singles. Joe Dickerson reached base with a walk, and he now holds the Bees' franchise record after reaching base in 35 straight games.

In a rain shortened game, the Idaho Falls Chukars came out on top, 6-1. John Leonard and Ben Swaggerty actually combined to throw a no-hitter, even though walks led to a run in the fourth for Casper. Clint Robinson belted his eighth home run of the year, a three-run shot to center in the first inning. Fernando Garcia picked up his first hit as a pro, a third inning single that drove in a run, and he also walked.

The Burlington Royals took game one of their scheduled doubleheader on Thursday, 5-0. Anthony Bradley shut down the opposition, scattering just two hits and allowing no runs over six innings. David Lough went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Wilson Tucker went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in the first inning.

A walkoff infield single in the bottom of the seventh did the Burlington Royals in, as they lost game two of the doubleheader 5-4. Jake Lane was hit twice after two hits in his first two at-bats. Alwin Perez went 2-for-3 with an RBI, bumping his average up to .300.

It took 16 innings, but the AZL Royals prevailed on Thursday night, 7-6. It was Ryan Angel's game winning sacrifice bunt that scored David Wood to put the Royals on top in the bottom of the 16th. Sam Runion started for the Royals, and he allowed five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. Hilton Richardson went 2-for-7 with a home run, his fourth of the season. Salvador Perez had three hits and an RBI in the Royals' extra inning win.
