RC Organizational Report: August 19

The organization managed only one win on Sunday in six games, but the story of the day was the effort of Blake Wood. Wood started the game for the Burlington Bees, and he tossed eight no-hit innings before being lifted before the ninth inning. Burlington ultimately lost the game, however, as the bullpen was unable to hold a 1-0 lead. RC has all the details inside in today's minor league report.

The Omaha Royals lost in a slugfest Sunday afternoon, 11-8. Both the O-Royals and the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes launched five home runs each. The O-Royals newest member, Paul Mildren, made the start against his old team. Mildren went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Shane Costa teed off for two home runs in the leadoff spot in the order, and Mitch Maier went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

The Wichita Wranglers picked up a 5-1 win on Sunday evening. The pitching was the story for the Wranglers, as Jason Shiell gave the Wranglers three innings to start the game, allowing one run. Justin Barnes and Jason Cromer combined for six no-hit innings to finish off the ballgame. Onil Joseph drove in two runs with a triple in the second inning to provide a sparkplug for the offense.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks game was called due to rain in the middle of the third inning. Rowdy Hardy was perfect through three innings of work before the game was stopped.

The Burlington Bees fell in a heartbreaker, 2-1. Blake Wood was the story, tossing eight no-hit innings before being lifted from the game. Reliever Ryan Di Pietro almost immediately blew the no-hitter, as he walked the first guy then allowed a bloop single that not only lost the no-hitter, but lost the lead as a run scored. Chris Hayes allowed an inherited run to score, but the damage was done. Jeff Howell went 2-for-3 and knocked in the only run for the Bees.

The Idaho Falls Chukars were stomped upon on Sunday night, 12-3. The first two Chukars pitchers, Ben Norton and Justin Phillips, allowed 10 runs over the first five innings of the game, and at that point is was all but over. Recently promoted Wilson Tucker went 1-for-4 with a walk in his first game with Idaho Falls. Clint Robinson went 2-for-4 and knocked in two of the three Chukar runs.

The Burlington Royals were downed 3-1 on Sunday night. Alex Caldera, coming off an excellent start, allowed two runs on four hits in four innings, and he struck out five. David Lough picked up two hits and knocked in the B-Royals’ only run of the night. Patrick Norris smacked three hits to bring his average up to .289 for the season.

The AZL Royals fell to the Angels on Sunday, 7-3. Danny Duffy made the start for the Royals, and his defense severely let him down as Duffy allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings, but he did strike out seven. Michael Lehmann relieved him, allowing a run (unearned) on two hits in four innings. Catcher Salvador Perez picked up two hits in the loss.
