The Royals on Saturday completed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kansas City acquired 20-year-old shortstop Rey Navarro from the D-Backs in exchange for minor league reliever Carlos Rosa. RC breaks down the trade inside.

Rey Navarro is a 20-year-old shortstop who has spent the last four seasons in the Diamondbacks’ system. He was selected by the D-Backs as a 17-year old in the third round of the 2007 draft, and he signed for a $333,000 bonus. That summer, Navarro debuted for Missoula in the Pioneer League and hit .250/.274/.283 in 212 at bats. He repeated the league in 2008 and made large improvements in both his on-base percentage and slugging percentage, finishing with a line of .258/.323/.385 in 291 games.

As a 19-year-old, Navarro last season made his full season debut with South Bend in the Midwest League. Among the youngest players in the league, the switch hitter got off to a slow start against the older competition, hitting just .227 in the first half. As he gained experience, however, he began playing well, and he hit .288 after the All-Star break en route to a respectable final season line of .262/.308/.339. He was particularly good last August, when he hit .327/.330/.391 in 110 at bats.

Following the season, FutureBacks.com ranked Navarro as the 18th-best prospect in the Diamondbacks’ system. A plus defender at short with tremendous range, Navarro has always played in leagues with players who on average are two to three years older than he is. He has been a bit error prone, but his sheer athleticism has always impressed scouts.

"A very young, athletic player," said one scout of Navarro to FutureBacks.com. "Most of his errors are the result of a lack of maturity and will be smoothed out down the road. As far as having the athleticism to make the tough play, he probably does that as well as anyone in the league."

In a FutureBacks.com profile, senior editor Keith Glab summed up Navarro’s talents thusly:

“Navarro runs well, makes some sensational plays on defense, and projects to hit for a high batting average if he ever faces competition his age. The only tool he lacks is power, but that is certainly a luxury rather than a necessity from a defense-minded shortstop.”

Navarro has been playing this season for Visalia in the High-A California League. In 19 games for the Rawhide, the young Puerto Rican hit .241/.307/.329 with a home run and a pair of doubles in 79 at bats. He will be assigned to Wilmington shortly, at which point he will take over starting shortstop duties for the Blue Rocks.

Carlos Rosa entered spring training with a chance to win a spot in the Kansas City bullpen, but he was reassigned to Omaha in mid-March. For the O-Royals this season, the 25-year-old righthander made six appearances, logging a 2-1 record and 3.65 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched.

This isn’t the first time the Royals have attempted to trade Rosa. The club actually agreed to a deal to send Rosa to the Marlins for Mike Jacobs prior to the 2009 season, but the Marlins’ concerns about an injury led the Royals to include Leo Nunez in the trade instead.

In eight seasons with the Royals’ organization, Rosa compiled a career record of 33-40 with a 3.65 ERA.
