Mike Montgomery finally got his second crack at making his Double-A debut, and this time Mother Nature didn’t intervene. Montgomery pitched NW Arkansas to its sixth straight win behind yet another Mike Moustakas home run. Unfortunately, the Naturals were the system’s only winner on Wednesday. AAA: Oklahoma City 9, Omaha 2

L: Luis Mendoza (0-1, 3.60)
HR: Alex Gordon (2)

Federico Castaneda finally surrendered his first runs of the season, yielding five in the third inning as the O-Royals fell to the Red Hawks, 9-2. Castaneda entered the game in relief of starter Luis Mendoza, who only threw two innings while giving up one run on two hits.

On offense, Alex Gordon slugged his second home run in the eighth inning, a towering blast to right field, while Cody Clark went 2-for-3 with a walk. Gordon's home run was the only extra base hit for Omaha, as they struggled to bring home their baserunners, stranding nine on the day.

Omaha (13-13) looks to earn a split against the Red Hawks and climb back above .500 Thursday night, sending Bryan Bullington to the mound to try to win his third game of the year.

AA: NW Arkansas 3, Springfield 1

W: Mike Montgomery (1-0, 1.59)
HR: Mike Moustakas (6)

Mike Montgomery pitched well in his second Double-A debut (the first was rained out last week), throwing 5.2 strong innings while surrendering one run on two hits in the Naturals 3-1 victory over the Cardinals. Montgomery had some control issues and issued four walks, but he displayed his dominant stuff by fanning eight batters while picking up his first Double-A victory.

Offensively, Mike Moustakas went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and he blasted his sixth home run of the year in the seventh inning. The Naturals were able to put runners on base all day, drawing nine walks to go along with the club’s six hits. They struggled, however, to bring those runs in, going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranding ten runners on the day. Nevertheless, the offense did just enough, and the pitching held the line as NW Arkansas won its sixth straight game while pushing its lead in the Texas League North Division to 4.5 games.

The Naturals (17-8) go for their fourth straight victory over the second place Cardinals on Thursday night in game three of their four-game series.

L: Jairo Cuevas (2-3, 8.06)
HR: Jamar Walton (1)

Wilmington starter Jairo Cuevas and reliever Manauris Baez combined to give up 10 runs in the top of the second, and the Blue Rocks never recovered, losing for the third straight day to Salem, 11-3. Cuevas lasted just 1.1 innings, giving up eight runs and six hits, including three home runs.

On offense, the recently activated Jamar Walton went 2-for-4, including a double and his first home run of the year. Eric Hosmer was 1-for-3, and Adrian Ortiz went 1-for-4 while extending his hitting streak to eight games.

Wilmington (10-16) will look to snap a five-game losing streak and avoid the sweep Thursday night against Salem.

Low-A: Kane County 6, Burlington 1

L: Kelvin Herrera (2-1, 2.97)

The Bees offense struggled on Wednesday, mustering only five hits and one run in a 6-1 loss to the Kane County Cougars. Joey Lewis and Juan Graterol both hit doubles, and Rene Oriental got a hit to extend his hitting streak to six games, but those were the few positives for the offense.

Starter Kelvin Herrera took his first loss of the season despite pitching well. The 20-year-old righthander threw six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking none and fanning four.

Burlington (10-17) will look to avoid a three-game sweep against Kane County on Thursday afternoon before embarking on a six-game road trip through Beloit and Cedar Rapids.
