Tim Smith launched a grand slam for the Naturals, and the Blue Rocks split a doubleheader with Lynchburg. Read the report inside.

Low-A: Clinton 4, Burlington 1

L: Tyler Sample (1-2, 4.89)

Burlington starter Tyler Sample provided his second straight quality start on Tuesday, but his offense could muster just a single tally as the Bees lost to the LumberKings, 4-1. Sample was tagged with his second loss of the season after surrendering three runs on seven hits and three walks in 6.0 innings pitched. He fanned four as his season ERA improved to 4.89. Scott Kelley and Dusty Odenbach combined for three innings in relief, surrendering just one unearned run on one hit and a pair of walks.

The Bees’ offense managed just seven hits, all singles. Fernando Cruz was 2-for-3, the only Bee to record more than one hit. Rene Oriental (1-for-3) scored the Bees’ only run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Ryan Wood in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Catcher Wil Myers was noticeably absent from the Bees’ lineup. The 19-year-old left the Bees’ game on Sunday night in the sixth inning. RC has learned that he is fine, however, and is likely to be in the lineup tomorrow as the Bees match up again with Clinton for game two of the three-game set.
