RC Players of the Month: June

Giavotella - June Hitter of the Month

The month of June was a bit of a disappointment, as none of the full season clubs won first half titles. Nevertheless, several prospects in the organization put up some very strong numbers, and the competition for the Hitter and Pitcher of the Month awards was fierce. At the end of the day, however, a pair of prospects stood above the rest.

Johnny Giavotella in June turned in arguably the best month of any prospect in the Royals organization this year. Indeed, the 23-year-old second baseman went nuts last month, racking up 49 hits while posting an absurd slash line of .398/.431/.610 with 14 doubles, four home runs, and 25 RBIs. He was held hitless in just three of the 29 games in which he played, and he turned in 16 multi-hit contests, including seven three-hit performances. When the month began, the New Orleans alum was hitting a respectable .285. His June performance raised his season line to an outstanding .327/.384/.459, and Giavotella now ranks among the PCL leaders in hits and doubles. The way Gio's hitting, it's hard to imagine the Royals will be able keep him in Omaha much longer.

Elisaul Pimentel began his excellent month with an outstanding outing against Potomac, limiting the Nationals to just one hit over eight scoreless innings. He was nearly as good the next time out as well, holding the Lynchburg Hillcats to just one run on four hits over seven innings pitched. In all, the 22-year-old right-hander started four games in June, and all were "quality" starts. He surrendered just three earned runs in 28.0 innings pitched, lowering his season ERA to 3.72. Indeed, after a rough start to his 2011 season, the young Dominican has posted a 2.82 ERA with eight "quality" starts over his last 10 outings.
